It’s days like these I have an overwhelming appreciation for winter.
Umeå can feel so small and remote sometimes that I often forget about the abundant outdoor opportunities so readily accessible. Or, is this act of overlooking more akin to being acclimatized to a place, upon which, the everyday routines and responsibilities appear never ending and always more important? It is too often so easy to save an experience for tomorrow.
This past Sunday gave me a much needed energy boost, that had been admittedly dwindling following an intense lineup of Christmas flights, too few hours of daylight, too many miles between Umeå and Fontainebleau, and my workaholic tendencies.

Umeå has a great network of cross country ski trails that I have been aware of, but have lacked the guts know-how of where, what, and how to take advantage of them. Fortunately, a very sporty and adventurous Danish classmate of mine organized a Sunday excursion to Hamptjärnsstugan, an adorable cottage with excellent views, and most important, sells waffles. The ski trail begins about 5 kilometers outside of town, and is an additional 5 kilometers of skiing to the cottage.
A group of 7 of us from UID met in the morning at IKSU Frilufts (an outdoor division of IKSU training facility) to rent skis (120SEK), before biking to *Danish Marie’s house. From there we loaded our bikes, arms, and bags before heading off to the trail.

Seeing as none of us had cross country skied before, not including Marie who is an expert in all things snow, there was a bit of a learning curve combined with a few hilarious falls. Though, we all caught on fairly fast, and Marie was an patient guide and instructor.

Hamptjärnsstugan cottage is located on top of hill, with beautiful views of the surrounding snow capped area. Parallel to the walking path up to the cottage is steep and windy sledding track, with free sleds at the top. Be careful not to approach the cabin on the wrong path, as you risk being walloped by a flying kid, or adult.

Inside the cottage is a cozy sitting area where you can warm up with coffee while enjoying waffles and hot dogs. Perfect fuel before the journey back. Note – apparently you can also rent the entire cottage.

*In my class there is both a Danish and Swedish Marie, therefore their names are typically preceded by their respective nationality. Both went skiing on Sunday, therefore it is especially important!
